CASE STUDY

In the Avatar Fire and Ash, the mood is dark, a bit intense, and has a lot of emotion tied to it. There is a bit of fear and spontaneous feeling towards it. There’s a strong feeling of danger and struggle in that whole clip. The lighting mostly uses shadows and smoke with bright reds and oranges coming from fire and lava. This gives off a feeling of destruction and tension. The color scheme uses a lot of grey's, blacks, and dark colors showing that this part of pandora has been ruined. These colors connotate danger, destruction, and violence.

The characters are shown in very different ways. Varang who was the leader of the ash People looks powerful and angry. She wears red and black war paint and tribal style clothing which makes her look scary and ready to fight. Her body language shows confidence and danger, and her face shows rage and leadership. On the other hand, Jake and his family seem more emotional and vulnerable. They are clearly trying to protect each other and survive. The trailer makes us feel sorry for them and want them to succeed.

The mise en scene gives us a lot of information it self. It takes place in a volcano area which is really different from the forests and oceans we saw in the earlier avatar movies. This shows that pandora is going through a hard time. We see props like weapons and broken things that hint at a big fight or disaster. The difference between fire which is Varang’s world and nature which is Jake’s world, shows the battle between destruction and peace.

The trailer clearly wants us to root for Jake and his family, and it shows Varang as a scary villain. It puts a big conflict about beliefs, survival, and power all seen through the visuals on screen and not just the  words being told.
